Babe, Don't Make It Cold!

Most of us default to cold water because it saves energy, prevents fading, and protects fabrics. But cold is not always enough. Laundry experts explain that when clothes or household items are heavily soiled or contaminated, cold water cycles around 80°F simply do not reach temperatures high enough to kill bacteria or break down certain soils effectively. For proper sanitation, certain items should be washed in hot water around 140°F or higher to ensure they are thoroughly clean and safe.

There are several items that should never be washed in cold water. Cleaning supplies like rags, sponges, and dusters used in kitchens and bathrooms can carry bacteria such as E. coli. Cold water will not sanitize them properly, but hot water can. Kitchen towels and pot holders collect grease and oil, which do not dissolve well in cold water. Hot water improves cleaning effectiveness and removes buildup more thoroughly. Reusable grocery bags can harbor hidden spills and raw meat residue that require heat to eliminate bacteria. Items with potential fecal contamination, including cloth diapers, baby clothes, undergarments, and socks, should always be washed hot to reduce germs. Towels and bath mats are constantly exposed to moisture and skin contact, making hot water important for sanitation. Activewear and sports gear absorb sweat and bacteria deep into performance fabrics, and heat helps break down odor causing buildup. Pet bedding collects oils, dander, and microbes that require higher temperatures for a truly fresh result. White and light colored clothes may also benefit from warm or hot water to remove ground in dirt and restore brightness.

Cold water is still excellent for everyday loads, especially dark colors and delicate fabrics. But when the goal is sanitation or deep cleaning, temperature matters. Hot water kills bacteria more reliably, breaks down oils and heavy soil, and helps restore brightness to whites and light fabrics.

For a professional laundry service, this reinforces an important truth. Laundry is not just about spinning clothes in a machine. It is about understanding fabric type, soil level, and the correct wash temperature to ensure garments are properly cleaned and cared for. Using the right water setting based on what you are washing is not about using more heat. It is about delivering effective cleaning that protects health and extends the life of clothing.

Professional laundry services bring experience, proper temperature control, and commercial grade equipment that most home setups cannot consistently match.

That means cleaner towels, fresher activewear, sanitized household items, and clothing that feels truly clean every time.
